SHOPPING

STAY ON TOP OF CHIANG MAI'S TOP SHOPS
Pick up a copy of the latest issue of 'Art & Culture Lanna'. It describes itself as "the definitive Northern Thailand guide to studios, shops and special places" and that's exactly what it is. With profiles of the highest quality, local brand name outlets, it's the perfect compliment to Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai for the most serious of shoppers. Better yet, it's updated more regularly, keeping you on top of what's where now (several of the shops in the Nimmanhaemin Soi 1 and Charoen Rat/Wat Kate area come and go). Available free from Thai International Airways and the Tourism Authority of Thailand offices, as well as many hotels, we cannot recommend it highly enough (even if it is sponsored by advertisers)!

OUR TOP TREASURE TROVES
Opened in October 2008, the Jang Mueng Gallery is our favorite new find! Located on Ratchamanka Soi 6 (J2-K2) opposite Wat Mengrai, this gallery is in a lovingly restored old Lanna home and a Thai treasure trove for home decorators. Filled with hundreds of old wood panels, betel boxes, and funky lamps, all from the personal collection of the architect behind the gallery, there are new and old, antique and reproductions, traditional and modern displays. Art and framing services too. Around for much longer is another treasure trove which we mention here as more than one serious shopper has written to us about it. Kesorn Arts, in a lovely old teak building at 154-6 Tha Phae (E), next door to Siam Celadon, stocks a wide range of treasures including tribal art, beads, jewelry and textiles. One of the owners is a specialist in beads, making for some very interesting conversation as well.

NIGHTLIFE RESTRICTIONS TIGHTENED
Most bars and restaurants in Thailand now close at 1am. A few after hours clubs come and go each year, all unofficial of course. In Chiang Mai, a few on the outskirts of the city are allowed to stay open until 2am (unless the police feel like closing clubs earlier). The drinking age meanwhile is now 20 and many clubs and bars do check for identification (we recommend you carry a copy of your passport, not the real thing). Also, as of Feb 2008, all air-conditioned restaurants and bars were supposed to go smoke-free, as well as hotel lobbies and all public areas. This law has yet to be strictly enforced however do beware with the fine for lighting up in restricted areas B 2000.

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO DO?
We’re not sure if Citylife Chiang Mai magazine is pulling a few legs (or got April Fools Day wrong when it printed this review in June 2009) but it says there is now an Airforce Beer Garden in Wing 41 (B3), open 5-11pm, with live music, football on screen, and food available from Chao Fah Talay Ham (B4) next door opposite the Airport... Red Song Taos now charge B 20 for shared rides, up from B 15. Meanwhile, bus services remain sketchy and not recommended by us. For those who insist on trying to use them, at last check, there were four bus routes operating in Chiang Mai, fares B 15/adult, B 5/child. For routes, see www.chiangmaibus.com (Thai language assistance advisable) or search the Citylife magazine website (www.chiangmaicitylife.com) for its May 2009 article entitled Bussing Around which has quite clear color coded bus route maps. Warning: Neither site provides the most accurate or detailed of maps and buses are few and far between. There are no bus maps easily available in the city either. Again, we recommend you stick to the song tao services, which at least get you door to door...

PROTEST UPDATES
Updated May 3, 2010
Stay on top of the news and avoid any gathering protestors during this time. Festive at times, the rallies may seem safe, but, things can rapidly get out of control. In Chiang Mai, they tend to congregate near the Warorot Grand Hotel (J1) behind Wat Phra Singh. City Hall (H1-I1) has been another hot spot at times. To stay abreast of the latest news (although most of it is about Bangkok at the time of writing this), see www.thaivisa.com’s Daily Bangkok Red Shirt Rally updates and search Twitter for Chiang Mai related content. Also, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has set up a hotline at 1672 to advise tourists on areas to avoid.

DENGUE FEVER ALERT
Thailand is experiencing a surge in dengue fever infections. A few tips for travellers: Always put on mosquito repellent even during the day (dengue carrying mosquitos feed from dawn to late morning and early afternoon to dusk; malaria carrying mosquitos at night as we understand it). Make sure any jars of water (common in Thai bathrooms) are filled to the brim and/or sealed shut. Avoid stagnant pools of water. Ask for a mosquito net if you find mosquitos in your room. And go to the doctor if you develop a major headache. For more tips, see http://www.cdc.gov/travel/diseases/dengue.htm and http://www.who.int/topics/dengue/en/.
